Description

This Mercedes Unimog U411 is a truly unique example from Italy. The Unimog was originally exported to Italy in 1963 as a convertible and transformed there by Italmotor S.p.A. into the current closed cab version. According to the two Italian brothers who diligently restored it in their Unimog workshop in Tuscany, it was for aesthetic reasons that this "coachbuild" was realized. The then Mercedes importer Italmotor was not at peace with the closed Westfalia cab available ex-factory and decided to build a prototype for a more beautifully lined alternative. The result is an unmistakably Italian design, with many stylistic elements of famous coachbuilders of the time. We have not been able to find information about a second example, which makes this particular Unimog very rare and perhaps unique. The website of the officialële Mercedes company archives shows a black and white photo of the then Italmotor S.p.A workshop in La Spezia. The Unimog itself is equipped with the 30 hp variant of Mercedes' 1.8-liter 4 cylinder diesel, which was used in many of the brand's models at the time, for example in the Ponton. The engine is coupled to a gearbox with 6 forward gears and 2 reverse gears, along with front and rear power take-offs. The all-wheel drive can be engaged manually when needed, and if that is not enough either, the differential can be locked in both the front and rear axles for maximum traction. This, combined with the portal axles, extreme suspension travel and oversized wheels, gives the Unimog its legendary off-road capabilities. Still the Unimog is world record holder in conquering steep slopes. Finally, this Unimog is equipped with a hydraulic system with 2 double-acting valves for operating hydraulic cylinders or powering attached implements. Also mounted is an original adapter for a snow plow, for example. All systems on board are fully working, mechanically, electrically and hydraulically.
The Unimog is in good, recently restored condition. The registration documents are faded copyën of Italian documents. To get a good idea of the lot we recommend you come to the viewing day.
