Description

The 1973 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 is a rugged and versatile vehicle that belongs to Mercedes-Benz's legendary Unimog series. The Unimog, derived from "UNIversal-MOtor-Gerät" (universal engine device), was originally developed as a multi-purpose vehicle for agricultural and military applications, and has evolved over the years into a wide range of variants for different purposes. The Unimog 406 is powered by a diesel engine. It has a torquey engine and features a four-wheel drive system with a limited slip differential for optimum traction even in rough terrain. The Unimog 406 was known for its excellent off-road capabilities and terrain skills. It had high ground clearance, a flexible chassis, a crawling gear and an exceptional climbing angle, making it capable of traversing difficult terrain. The Unimog 406 had a tough and functional body that allowed for different configurations, such as an open pickup bed, an enclosed cab with a cargo box, a fire truck or even a snowplow. The vehicle had a modular design, which meant that different pieces of equipment could be easily attached or removed. The 1973 Mercedes-Benz Unimog 406 remains an icon among off-road vehicle enthusiasts and professionals in need of a reliable and powerful machine for demanding tasks. It is a symbol of intransigence, functionality and versatility in the automotive world. This car was originally delivered in Oct. 1973 by the importer Hoegen Dijkhof of Doetinchem to a client in Warmenhuizen. In 1981, the Unimog was traded in at the Hoegen Dijkhof company by this client, after which it was purchased by the last owner and used as a truck / tractor to transport, among other things, counterweight elements for heavy telescopic cranes (100 to 300 tons) on a low loader. In 1987 the company Hoegen Dijkhof fitted this truck with a Carrymaster 750 kg hydraulic crane with hydraulic outrigger, of which the official assembly and construction drawings are present with the truck. The hydraulic system is controlled by a valve block. The Unimog engine and all systems were completely overhauled in 1994/95, the chassis was completely blasted and preserved both internally and externally, the body was completely refurbished and painted in an orange color. The aluminum body panels were also customized and mounted by Carrosseriebouw bedrijf Ligthart in Schagerbrug. Also, during this major refurbishment, the wooden body floor was replaced with a 20 mm thick steel plate, which, due to this weight, gave the vehicle a great stabilization and driving comfort improvement. The current color yellow with black accents was given to the car in 2003, which was done by the Scheurwater paint shop in Den Helder. Unlike many such vehicles in coastal areas, this Unimog has not been on the beach and has therefore never been in contact with salty seawater. In all the years this car has been owned by its current owner, it has always been stored in a storage shed, which has benefited its condition. As of October 9, 2023, the car is exempt from the MOT inspection requirement. To get a good impression of the lot we advise you to come to the viewing day.
