The 1970 MG Midget MK III is a classic example of the British sports car of the 1960s and 1970s, designed to provide driving pleasure in a compact and accessible form. MG introduced the Midget in 1961 as an affordable two-seat roadster based on the Austin-Healey Sprite. With its lightweight body and lively handling, the Midget quickly became popular among enthusiasts of sporty, yet simple cars. The MK III, produced from 1966 to 1974, brought some significant improvements over its predecessors, including a stronger engine, more comfort and ease of use.
This particular 1970 example is a true "barn find," meaning that the car was recovered in relatively original condition after years of storage. The MG was put away driving several years ago, but has not been driven on the road since. Thus, before it can be driven again, it will require maintenance. For many enthusiasts and restorers, however, this provides a great basis for restoring the car to its former glory, in part because of the simplicity of its engineering and the wide availability of parts.
The MK III is distinguished from earlier models by the use of a more powerful 1275cc four-cylinder engine, sourced from the Mini Cooper, which gave the car lively performance. Along with an improved soft-top mechanism and the addition of a lockable trunk, this generation of the Midget offered improved convenience without losing its sporty character. With its low weight and direct steering, the MG Midget is known for its go-kart-like handling, providing pure driving pleasure.
Although this example is now in need of maintenance, it offers great potential for the enthusiast. The fact that this is a barn find often means that many original elements are still present, which can add to the value and authenticity of the car. For collectors and fans of classic British roadsters, this is an excellent opportunity to own a piece of automotive history and breathe new life into it.
