The 1973 BMW 2500 E3 is a car that played an important role in BMW's evolution as a luxury car manufacturer. At a time when the market for premium sedans was dominated by brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW decided to go its own way with the E3 Series. This model, also known as the "New Six," laid the foundation for what would later become the 7 Series, combining a sporty driving experience with the comfort and refinement one would expect from a luxury sedan. In doing so, the BMW 2500 was one of the first models to embody this philosophy, with a smooth six-in-line engine and a balanced chassis.
Under the hood is a 2.5-liter six-in-line engine, a power source that symbolizes BMW’s engineering craftsmanship. With an output of about 150 horsepower, the 2500 offered a smooth and refined driving experience, with the engine known for its smoothness and distinctive sound.
What set the E3 apart from its competitors was its handling. Where many luxury sedans focused on comfort and an isolating driving experience, BMW gave the driver an active role. Direct steering, balanced weight distribution and powerful engines made the E3 a sedan that was both quick and agile. This model was thus the forerunner of the sporty luxury cars’s that BMW would later become big with. Moreover, the success of the E3 would contribute to the development of the 5 Series and the first 7 Series, which gave BMW a definitive place in the premium segment.
The look of the E3 is typical BMW: sleek, functional and timeless. The double round headlights and the recognizable BMW kidneys give the car a recognizable and stately appearance. The interior was extremely luxurious for the time, with options such as air conditioning, power windows and power steering – amenities that were far from standard in many cars’s at the time. This made the 2500 not only a pleasant travel car, but also a model that suited the requirements of the business driver who wanted more than just comfort.
This particular 1973 example is extra special because of its original condition and German documentation. Some fifty years after production, it is rare to find an E3 that is still unrestored and well preserved. Originating from a German collection, this car exudes history and authenticity – something increasingly appreciated among enthusiasts and collectors.
