The 1979 BMW 635 CSi is a car that perfectly embodies the essence of a classic grand tourer. Part of the iconic E24 generation, this model combined long-range comfort with serious performance and timeless design. Introduced as the successor to the famed E9 coupes, the E24 marked the beginning of BMW's long tradition of building luxury coupes. With its distinctive "sharknose," long hood and muscular proportions, the 635 CSi exuded exactly what it also made you feel on the road: power, agility and refinement all in one package.
Under the hood is a 3.5-liter six-in-line engine that was the flagship of BMW's engine lineup at the time. With an output of 218 horsepower and a smooth character, this engine gave the 635 CSi an impressive mix of performance and everyday practicality. Acceleration was powerful and linear, with a distinctive mechanical sound that fans of BMW's six-in-line instantly recognize. Combined with rear-wheel drive and a balanced suspension, the car offered a driving experience that perfectly matched BMW's slogan: Freude am Fahren.
What makes the 635 CSi extra special is that the model has a clear link to motorsport. BMW used the E24 as the basis for several racing cars that were successful in competitions such as the European Touring Car Championship. The combination of a rigid body, an advanced chassis and a powerful engine made the 6 Series feel at home not only on the highway, but also on the race track. This gave the 635 CSi a sporting appeal that went beyond its looks.
In terms of design, the E24 is a textbook example of understated elegance. The sharp lines, characteristic Hofmeister nod and subtle chrome accents give the car a timeless look that is as impressive today as it was in 1979. The interior is typical BMW: a functional and uncluttered cockpit focused on the driver, with high-quality materials that still exude a sense of luxury after decades. The seats are comfortable for long journeys, but at the same time offer enough lateral support to fully utilize the car's sporty driving capabilities.
In its day, the BMW 635 CSi was a car for the connoisseur: powerful, refined and designed for long distance driving. Today it is a desirable classic, partly because of its solid build quality and the mechanical purity that modern cars increasingly lack. Well maintained examples are scarce and are increasingly appreciated by collectors and enthusiasts who appreciate the charm of an analog driving experience.
