Description

The 1981 BMW 635 CSi is one of the most characterful coupés in the brand's history. Belonging to the iconic E24 generation, this model combines elegance, power and timeless style in a way that only BMW can. Introduced in the late ‘70s as the sporty flagship model within the 6 Series, the 635 CSi quickly became known as the ultimate grand tourer: a car designed to travel long distances at high speed, without compromising on comfort or refinement.

Under the hood lies a powerful 3.5-liter six-in-line engine, whose smooth running and impressive torque made it one of the best power sources of its time. With approximately 218 horsepower and a manual or automatic transmission, the 635 CSi offered a driving experience that at the time could only be found in high-performance GT’s of the highest class. Direct steering, rear-wheel drive and balanced suspension made the car not only fast on straights, but also surprisingly agile in corners – a feature that distinguishes the 6 Series to this day.

The design of the E24 is considered by many to be one of the finest ever from München. Its distinctive ‘sharknose’ front end, long hood and low, muscular body give the 635 CSi a look that is both timeless and aggressive. The interior exudes the same class, with high-quality materials, a driver-facing dashboard and seats that offer both comfort and support. This was a car in which you felt as much at home on a leisurely drive as you did on a twisty mountain trail.

In addition to its reputation as a luxurious sports coupé, the 635 CSi also asserted itself in motorsport. In touring car championships such as the European Touring Car Championship, it proved its potential on the race track and helped build BMW’s sporty image. This racedna is still felt in the way the car drives: direct, powerful and with an engine that invites you to climb through the revs.

The BMW 635 CSi was in its time a serious alternative to luxury GT’s such as the Porsche 928 and the Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC. Where other brands emphasized comfort and performance, BMW managed to bring those two worlds together perfectly in a coupé that was both fast and stylish. This made the car loved by business drivers, driving enthusiasts and collectors looking for a classic with character.

Today, the BMW 635 CSi is a sought-after classic that perfectly represents BMW’s heritage of sporty luxury. Its combination of a powerful six-in-line engine, timeless design and driving dynamics make it a car that continues to impress whether parked or racing down the road at speed. An icon from a time when BMW set the standard for the ultimate driver's car.
