The 1985 BMW M 635 CSi is a sporty coupé that strikes the perfect balance between luxury and performance. Known internally as the E24, this model was the flagship of BMW’s 6 Series and was taken to an even higher level in M trim. While the standard 6 Series was already known for its elegant lines and dynamic handling, BMW’s Motorsport department added a powerful engine and sharper suspension, making the M 635 CSi one of the most coveted youngtimers of its time.
Under the long hood lies a 3.5-liter six-in-line engine with dual overhead camshafts, derived directly from the block from the legendary BMW M1. With 286 horsepower and a high-revving character, this engine offers an impressive blend of power and smoothness. The engine was a technological marvel at the time, with refined throttle response and an addictive intake sound that makes every acceleration an experience. Combined with a five-speed manual transmission, the M 635 CSi is a car that engages its driver to the max.
This example is an original Dutch-delivered car, which makes it extra special. Many M 635 CSi’s were imported, making a copy with a known history and original Dutch delivery a sought-after find for the true enthusiast. In its time, the M 635 CSi was an exclusive car, intended for the driver who wanted to combine luxury with serious performance. The combination of a manual transmission and the powerful six-in-line engine provided a pure and mechanical driving feel that is becoming increasingly rare in modern sports car’s.
The design of the E24 is still considered one of the most beautiful BMW’s ever built. The iconic ‘sharknose’ low, wide stance and subtle M details give the car a timeless look. The interior is equally impressive, with high-quality materials, a driver-facing dashboard and a finish typical of BMW’s from the ‘80s: functional, but with a sense of exclusivity. The sports seats offer excellent support, making long drives as comfortable as they are dynamic.
In addition to its stately appearance, the M 635 CSi also had an impressive reputation on the road. With a top speed of over 250 km/h and a sprint to 100 km/h in less than seven seconds, it was one of the fastest four-seat GT’s of its time. BMW positioned the car as a direct competitor to the Porsche 928 and the Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC, with the M 635 CSi setting it apart with its driving dynamics and sporty tuning. This was a true ‘bahn-stormer’ designed to cover long distances at high speed without sacrificing comfort.
This 1985 BMW M 635 CSi is a driving piece of BMW Motorsport history. With its impressive engine, timeless design and original Dutch delivery, this is a car that will appeal to collectors and drivers alike. A classic car that evokes admiration not only when standing still, but especially when driven as it was meant to be driven: at speed, with precision and with the characteristic sound of BMW’s legendary six-in-line engine.
